5月10日晚，Mr. Byron Sherman 在丽泽A106为同学们介绍了一部反映中国封建传统的经典影片《大红灯笼高高挂》，他表示这部电影给中国的电影业带来了国际的关注。

首先，Byron 向同学们介绍了这部电影的背景。《大红灯笼高高挂》由张艺谋导演，改编自苏童的小说《妻妾成群》。张艺谋对中国的农村十分了解，认为艺术应该揭露不公平的现象并为被压迫的人民群众呐喊。张艺谋的电影和苏童的小说都聚焦于女权问题，这也是《大红灯笼高高挂》中所体现的核心。

随后，Byron 为同学们分析了这部电影的情节。影片所反映的故事发生在二十世纪二十年代的陈家大院。它体现了中国的封建社会和传统观念。影片中的陈老爷永远处于最高地位，女人对于他来说只是可以随意使用和丢弃的物品。而女主角颂莲迫于家庭压力嫁入陈家成为了四姨太，她代表了一种新兴的反传统的力量。此外，Byron通过介绍陈家大院的构造和对颂莲以及陈家其他女人的分析，让同学们对这部影片有了更为深刻的理解。

A Lecture: Raise the Red Lantern

On the evening of May 10th, Mr. Byron Sherman introduced a classic film named Raise the Red Lantern in Lize Building A106. He mentioned that the film attracted international attention.

First of all, Byron introduced the background of the film to students. The film was directed by Zhang Yimou and reorganized from Su Tong’s fiction Wives and Concubines. Zhang knew Chinese villages very well. He thought art should expose injustice and speak for the oppressed. Both Zhang’s film and Su’s book focused on the female issue, which was the core of the film “Raise the Red Lantern”.

Later on, Byron explained basic plots of the film. The story was set in the Chen household in the 1920s. It symbolized China’s feudal society. The master in the film was in control like a God and women could be used and thrown away as objects. The main actress Songlian was on behalf of the youth power. Besides, with Byron’s particular introduction of Chen’s house, Songlian and other women in family, students got a deep understanding of this film.

Finally, Byron answered the questions some students asked about the film’s details and the lecture ended with a huge round of applause.
